5846 Films, the NYC homies responsible for the “No Resolution 2” video, have combined two choice pieces of my interest at the moment: Kanye West’s “Devil in a New Dress” produced by Bink!, my vote for the all-time most underrated east coast producer ever (go to his Wiki for the resume–“Beasts from the East” alone gets him a plaque) and the sublime 1976 John Cassavetes film The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.
I’ve been watching the Criterion Collection piece by piece for almost a month, hard work when you lay your head down after nights of weird cigars in Hammonton, New Jersey and drinks at a speakeasy that fronts as a mortgage and investment company in the heart of center city. I’ve promised myself to finish the film so many times now and yet here we are, a month later, with probably 30 minutes left of footage still waiting for me in the ol’ trusty DVD player.
I won’t spoil the plot of the movie, but Lyle and the guys at 5846 took the essential ingredient of lead character played by Ben Gazzara, a proud two-bit strip club/ ensemble “theatre” owner who gets caught up with the wrong guys. All he’s got is his women and a borrowed gun to get out. Check out the video and add The Killing of a Chinese Bookie to your Netflix.
