Ask the Click, Yo They Spit Metal Lungies

I’m very proud to have contributed to the latest installment of Beat Drop over at Metal Lungies, one of the best hip hop blogs you should be up on.  After featuring the works of giants such as DJ Premier, Large Professor, Dr. Dre and more, this segment features the best of the Neptunes.  The premise was simple:  pick your 5 favorite Neptunes productions and write some jibber-jabber.  Honorable mentions go to Luda’s “Southern Hospitality,” Busta’s “As I Come Back” and Slim Thug’s “I Ain’t Heard of That” but overall, my list is pretty formiddable:

The Clipse “Ride Around Shining”

Baby f/ The Clipse “What Happened To That Boy”

Justin Timberlake “Like I Love You”

Noreaga “Full Mode”

Neptunes f/ Re-Up Gang “Hot Damn”

Shoutouts to AaronM, Buhizzle, DJ01, and Rostam for bringing me in off the bench for this one.  Hopefully I can continue my role as the best damn pinch runner/defensive replacement in the blogging business (word up Michael Bourn!).

  1. Yooo you came through bigger than Bourn.. you an upcoming star like Hunter Pence.
If you wanna be invited back for the next installment.. where da eggplant parm at??

  2. DJ01:

I like Hunter Pence but he looks like every goofball long neck Jersey kid I used to play baseball against….but I definitely appreciate the connection! I’ll always be a fan of the Michael Bourn Supremacy–he was the Willie Mayes Hayes of the Phillies last year.

    Franchise:

It killed me to bump Luda for JT, but “Like I Love You” was the soundtrack to my wild year of girls, cars, drinks, and school. Nostalgia wins outright! (And black chicks at college used to say I reminded them of JT)

  3. good picks, zill! here’s my list:

clipse- “grindin'” (one of my all-time favorite rap beats.)
nore- “full mode” (we’re both on this: this joint is a monster.)
clipse- “mr. me too” (this song had more to do with fresh cherries from yakima’s sound more than any folk album ever created.)
birdman- “what happened to that boy” (it’s a shame they wasted one of their best beats on such a terrible rapper, but at least the clipse are one it.)
    p. diddy- “d.i.d.d.y.” (sucks as a song, but that beat is fire.)

  4. Good picks. I respect “Grindin” but living on the east coast, I heard about 13,439 rappers “freestyle” over that beat for a year straight. In a couple of years, the damage will subside and I’ll love it wholeheartedly.

I even really liked that joint the Tunes did on the Bad Boys II soundtrack with Diddy, Loon and Lenny Kravitz. It was just a cowbell, live drums and like a 3 note melody.

  5. i liked the “la la la” track that hov did on BBII; in fact, that almost made my list.

as for “grindin’,” i’m an east-coast rap diehard, so i’ve heard plenty of them, but the reason why “grindin'” gets its propers is because that beat made everyone sound great. have you heard the ali vegas freestyle over it? it’s freaking nuts.
